From the beautiful and historic booths, salvaged from a southern Maine church, to the wonderful Irish food, Augusta’s Black and Tan has fast become a very popular place since opening last June. Located just above Water Street, Stacey and Chris Shaw’s restaurant was recommended to us by our friends Rocko and Robin Graziano, who accompanied us to dinner there.

Our favorite table at Wilton’s wonderful Calzolaio restaurant is in the far corner of the interior room, with stone walls on two sides of us. We’ve celebrated anniversaries and other special events at this table enjoying our favorite dishes.

We are very lucky that Amy and Bret Baker chose Maine as the place to open their own restaurant, after an impressive career managing and cooking in restaurants in other states. They were flying to Vermont when a nearby passenger heard of their plans and urged them to visit Maine.

They did, and ended up purchasing an historic home built in 1896 in Norway, a vibrant Maine community, creating one of our state’s best restaurants. And that is no exaggeration. Since opening six years ago, their business has grown every year.

Lots of families with kids were enjoying the Samoset Resort with us on a cold January weekend. And it’s easy to understand why, from the indoor playground and swimming pool to the ice rink to the comfortable rooms.

We scheduled our visit to coincide with Sunday afternoon’s Pies on Parade fundraiser for the local food bank. With savory and sweet pies in 25 locations around Rockland, well, I don’t have to tell you why I love this event! This year I couldn’t get beyond 11 places before I just could not eat another bite.

Lunch at Grand Central Cafe and a movie make a great afternoon

City or Town:
Waterville
Blog Showcase Image:

It’s a great combination: Enjoying a tasty meal at Grand Central Café in Waterville, then strolling across the parking lot to see a movie at Railroad Square Cinema.

We did just that after reading JP Devine’s review of La La Land, and the movie was everything JP said it was. Simply put: fabulous. Railroad Square is our favorite movie theater, and after visiting the café for the first time, we’ll plan more eat and treat afternoons now.
