I get great joy at looking at large vegetable gardens. So it is no surprise that I was very happy to visit the Nezinscot Farm in Turner. Customers are free to roam around the farm where vegetables and animals are well tended.

I loved seeing all the beautiful veggies happily growing on a massive scale in and outside greenhouses. And if they aren’t seen as fresh produce or food at the farm’s café, they are likely to be put up as pickles, jams, or marinara sauce available at their store.

The bear almost trampled me!

Our camp on Sourdnahunk Lake on the edge of Baxter Park is the best thing Linda and I ever purchased. Our kids grew up here and our grandchildren are now enjoying the camp, which is part of an old sporting camp, Camp Phoenix.

Reading through our camp journal recently, I decided there are a lot of good stories to be shared, so today I’m starting to write those in a new series I’ll call True Tales of Camp Phoenix. And yes, these are all true!

Today, we’ll start with bear tales

Linda's awesome gardens

My wife Linda is an amazing gardener. In addition to stunning flower gardens in the front and back yards, she has a large vegetable garden, raised beds, and a 14 by 28 foot Hoop House. Yes, we have fresh veggies all winter long.

I wandered the yard recently and took these photos.

Kate Flora is prolific, a novelist whose books are full of suspense, great dialogue, and superb descriptions of her characters. And they are impossible to put down.

As I neared the end of Led Astray, Kate’s book published last October, I found myself breathing deeply, anxiously awaiting the climax.

I find it amazing that she has cranked out 15 books, including many award winning novels. She won the 2013 and 2015 Maine Literary Award for Crime Fiction. She’s also written nonfiction true crime books, and another of my favorites, A Good Man with a Dog, which she co-wrote with retired Maine game warden Roger Guay.

Legislature overrides Governor's veto of Public Lands bill

Blog Showcase Image:

After several years of intense effort, a bill governing our public lands has been enacted, thanks to votes in the House and Senate to override the Governor’s veto of the bill. Several legislators, including my State Senator Tom Saviello, and our state’s major environmental groups, deserve credit for crafting this bill and never giving up on it. Last year, the same bill was vetoed by the Governor, and the veto override failed.

Among other things, this bill:

The website of Attean Lake Lodge describes it as a “unique” place, and it is, but it’s much more than that. It’s an island paradise which draws visitors back year after year.
