40 Paper in Camden is Exceptional

Submitted By George Smith on Mon, 01/18/2016 - 11:15

If you are enjoying the Samoset Resort’s ice bar this weekend, lucky you! If not, there’s still opportunity to do that next weekend. For two weekends every January, the Resort features this amazing structure and display, chiseled from 50,000 pounds of ice, and you really have to see it to believe it.

Unfortunately for us, we were unable to get there on those weekends this year, but we did spend two nights at this favorite place earlier...

Looking for an adventure in eating? Do you like trying new foods that are full of flavor, spicy, and creative? Then we have the place for you. Tempo Dulu serves Southeast Asian cuisine and is located in Portland's West End at the Danforth Inn where we enjoyed a lovely visit before Christmas.

Holy Connoli! We Loved Ming Lee!

Submitted By George Smith on Mon, 01/04/2016 - 09:00

For years I have been stopping for terrific Chinese food at Ming Lee in Waterville.  My hairdresser Susan Martin first mentioned how unique their food is. Of course I followed up and I do agree, the food here is very special. Because I often brought home take-out food from Ming Lee, George thought it was a take-out place with little seating. He was shocked that it is a spacious, nice dining spot!

                The dishes here have...

Treat yourself to a Christmas present at the Danforth Inn

Submitted By George Smith on Thu, 12/24/2015 - 13:53

Described as a “luxury boutique inn,” the Danforth in Portland is all of that and much more, starting with the beautiful brick exterior. A stunningly beautiful federal-style building constructed in 1823, the Inn was extensively renovated this year by new owners Raymond Brunyanszki and Oscar Verest.

Raymond and Oscar own the Camden Harbour Inn and Natalie’s restaurant, both of which we visited and wrote...

Great News! Skowhegan’s Pickup Café now offers lunch

Submitted By George Smith on Fri, 12/18/2015 - 08:48

Whenever I hear Skowhegan’s Pickup Cafe mentioned, I smile. The thought of a cafe that opens its garage door side wall to a wonderful patio and pergola in the summer, then closes those same doors to provide a unique cozy space when the weather turns chilly, is true Maine. The farm to table movement is at the forefront and is the driving force behind this restaurant. The wall listing over 50 farms and local suppliers says it all. You know that freshness and quality ingredients matter here. Adam and Rosa Rosario do a superb job here...

A memorable meal at Morse's in Waldoboro

Submitted By George Smith on Thu, 12/10/2015 - 11:50

Tucked in the rural landscape of Waldoboro might not be where you would expect to find great German sausages and a huge variety of European cooking products. But look no further than Morse's Restaurant and European Deli. Customers are torn between eating first and then shopping or shopping first and then eating.

Don’t Miss Rockland’s Pies on Parade!

Submitted By George Smith on Thu, 12/10/2015 - 09:59

It’s a brilliant idea, linking the eating of pie to donations to a food bank.  Rockland’s annual Pies on Parade is an event that Linda and I try to never miss. It’s scheduled for Sunday, January 31, 2016, from 1 to 4 pm.

Just imagine: 25 businesses offering samples of 40 different pies. Well, you don’t have to imagine this, because that’s what Pies on Parade offers. In my mind, I justify all that indulgent eating by walking from business to business. Schooner Bay Taxi does offer free transportation at designated stops, but if you are able to walk, all the places are within easy walking distance....

Celebrating Farm Fresh in Bangor

Submitted By George Smith on Wed, 11/25/2015 - 10:00

The Maine Harvest Festival is an amazing event – and mouthwatering too! In just its third year, Judy Perkins of Garden Ridge Farm and her staff have turned this into a major statewide event, featuring more than 150 farmers and other creative people who filled the entire Bangor Auditorium.

I spent a good part of the day eating my way from booth to booth. The Festival features great...

The Riverside Inn and Bluebird Ranch Family Restaurant are a great combination

Submitted By George Smith on Thu, 11/19/2015 - 11:01

When I received the invitation to speak to a University of Maine at Machias class about fisheries and wildlife careers, I suggested to Linda that we turn this into a travel column trip and she quickly agreed. And we knew just where we wanted to stay: the Riverside Inn in East Machias.

We’d been driving by the Inn for years on our way to Lubec and knew it to be a very popular place. When owners Ellen McLaughlin and...

Long Grain is still high on our favorites list

Submitted By George Smith on Thu, 11/12/2015 - 09:08

When we entered Long Grain’s tiny restaurant on Camden’s Main Street, a table of six glanced our way and I spotted our friend Priscilla, who told me they were eating here because they’d read our column about Long Grain published two years ago. That made us feel good, of course, knowing that we’d helped this small but amazing place, designated our favorite Thai restaurant in our travel book that will be published next spring by Islandport Press in Yarmouth.
